Being a graduate of West Point, owner Bill Foley wanted to name Las Vegas' first major professional sports franchise the Black Knights. However, he ran into trademark issues with both his alma mater and the U.S. government. Shortening it to just Knights would have run afoul of the OHL team from London, Ontario, which owns the trademark in Canada. So on November 22, 2016, in a botched unveiling ceremony, Foley and the NHL settled on Vegas Golden Knights as the team's monicker (dropping the Las from the local identifier).
