The NHL replaced the 1979 All-Star Game with a best-of-three series between the NHL All-Stars and the Soviet Union national team. After the NHL All-Stars beat the Soviets 4-2 in Game One, the Soviets won the next two, 5-4 and 6-0, to win the series.
