The Flyers' alternate jersey is styled after the jerseys they wore in select away games during the 1973-74 season, complete with white nameplates. (Under NHL rules at the time, away teams could only wear names on the backs of the uniforms by consent of the home team, unless it was an NBC game, in which names were mandated.) For the first two games they were worn, the Flyers stayed true to the original style, adopting the funky looking "1" and the non-angular "2," among other numerical differences. Starting with the alternates' third game, the number style reverted back to the one featured on their regular home and away uniforms, keeping the white nameplate.
