1992-93
• All teams wear a patch commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The Montreal Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques wear the French language version of the patch.
• John Ziegler steps down as NHL president and is replaced by Gil Stein. He holds that position until February 1, 1993, when Gary Bettman is installed as the NHL's first-ever commissioner.
• The NHL welcomes Tampa, Florida, to the league with the birth of the Lightning. Also, the NHL returns to the Canadian capital of Ottawa for the first time since 1934 with the arrival of the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa's previous NHL team was also called the Senators.
• Teemu Selanne of the Winnipeg Jets shatters the rookie scoring record, scoring a whopping 76 goals and 56 assists for 132 points.
• The Montreal Canadiens win their record 24th Stanley Cup, beating Wayne Gretzky's Los Angeles Kings, four games to one. Three of the Canadiens' wins came in overtime. The Toronto Maple Leafs were one win away from making it an historic Canadiens-Maple Leafs Finals, but Gretzky and the Kings thwarted that prospect with wins in games six and seven in the Campbell Conference Finals.
