1933-34 • On February 14, the NHL's first All-Star Game, albeit an unofficial one, is played in Toronto. It was a benefit game for Irvine "Ace" Bailey, who suffered a career-ending injury earlier in a December game against the Boston Bruins. Bailey was checked from behind by Eddie Shore in retaliation for a check he received from King Clancy. Shore's check on Bailey knocked him unconscious. Bailey then suffered severe hemmorhaging and was not expected to live through the night in the hospital. He gradually recovered, but his hockey career was over. Bailey's number 6 was the first number in NHL history to be retired. One of the most memorable moments of the game was when Bailey presented Shore with his All-Star jersey -- a sign that Bailey had fully forgiven him. Bailey would pass away in 1992 at the age of 88.

• The Ottawa Senators play their last game, as they would move to St. Louis during the off-season. NHL hockey would not return to Canada's capital city for 58 years.

• The Chicago Black Hawks beat the Detroit Red Wings, three games to one, to win the Stanley Cup.
